Purpose:
The purpose of this stage is for students to develop their understanding of the topic.
Grouping:
For these activities the students will work individually and in small groups of 3 or 4
Resources Preparation:
Students will examine all Graeme Base texts and then focus specifically on The Waterhole.
Sequence of activities:
Lesson 4 - Number Line
All Graeme Base texts
Theme: Numeracy
The students will place each of the Base books along a number line continuum according to certain criteria: ie., Focus on Literacy, Focus on Art, Focus on Numeracy, Focus on Humanities, Focus on Science.
Number lines - Increasing and Decreasing patterns
Lesson 5 - Spotlight onThe Waterhole
The Waterhole Theme: Humanities
Students split into groups and research one of the continents or countries featured in The Waterhole. They use computer and textbook resources to learn about the conservation and vulnerable animals of their region. They make a short presentation to the class followed by a short group discussion on the importance of saving water.
Strategies and skills required:-
Number skills including understanding and interpreting Number lines
Development of basic inquiry skills including observation, the collection of various types of evidence, asking and answering questions about evidence and presenting information in a variety of ways.
Evaluation and Assessment:
Working cooperatively in a group.
Equal share of responsibility.
Understanding of Number Lines.
Observe and listen to the students as they present.
